Internalizing White Supremacy: From White Nationalists to Us

Dr. Blazak will be presenting on the causes of and responses to white supremacy for the Port of Portland’s Diversity Summit.

Recent years have seen a rise in hate crimes and a new brand of white supremacy called white nationalism. Why is this occurring and what does it have to do with our own views on the racial shifts in the United States? This workshop looks at the connections between the tensions around race in America and our own racial journeys. Topics of discussion include internalized white supremacy, implicit bias, bias crimes, and racial bias and healing. The workshop also offers the technique of mindfulness as a way to monitor our own biases. By connecting extremist activities, like crimes committed by active hate mongers, to our own struggles navigating demographic and cultural changes, we can uncover our role in creating more empathetic environments.
